This is a valuable exsiting example of a pure Chinese style building.
When trade of marine products between Hakodate and China was active,
Chinese merchants in Hakodate constructed the hall as a sanctuary to
enshrine Guan Yu(Lord Guan), who was a military officer in the kingdom of
Shin Han one of the three kingdoms in China along with Wei and Wu.
Construction took about 3 years and was completed in December 1910.
Carpenters, sculptors, and lacquer craftmen from China were invited to
work on the building.
Bricks, altars and utensils were brought directly from China,
and an enormous amount of money was expanded.
The altar of Guan Yu(Lord Guan) is brilliant with golden colors and
is surrounded by many small rooms.
The decoration and furniture inside the hall are grand and magnificent.
The hall is owned by the Hakodate Chinese Memorial Hall Aggregate Corporation.
