Hokkaido was a back country before 明治 era.
明治(Meiji) era was from 1868 to 1912.
Hokkaido was a new land for frontiers.
Before at that time, japanese people call Hokkaido "蝦夷地(EZO chi)."
And there were native people of Hokkaido "アイヌ(ainu)" whom
Japanese people call "蝦夷(EZO)."
Now we know that Japanese and Ainu have no difference for DNA.
At that time, herrings gave too much money for fisher men.
They sent herrings to 江戸(Edo (old name of 東京(Tokyo))) by ship.
So you can see such a big house here, country side, in front of sea of Japan.
